SCARLETT

My first month here hasn’t been so promising, and it’s starting to get to me. Even though I have been bending over backward to deliver everything Melinda has asked of me, she and Jessica don’t seem to like me very much on a personal level. It’s peculiar since my first week here was smooth, and I thought that at least my boss tolerated me.

After Jessica invited me to her odd impromptu meeting up in Mel’s office, where nobody could hear her practically yell at me, I ran to the bathroom on the same floor and quickly wiped off my makeup. For the rest of the afternoon, I can’t help but notice the triumphant look on Melinda’s face. Something tells me that she had something to do with it, and Emma hasn’t been around all day for me to ask.

The next day—first thing in the morning before anyone gets to the floor—I sit alone in my tiny office and log into the company’s intranet. In the Human Resources section, I sift through dozens of documents in search of the dress code guidelines. Funnily, I can’t find any. So I go back to my inbox and search for the employee manual that HR had emailed me when I first joined. Lo and behold, it doesn’t mention much on the matter except ‘appropriate office attire.’

Sitting back with my eyebrows in a knot, I try to recall every outfit I’ve seen on women around the building. Melinda constantly wears skirts short enough to reveal half her thighs when she sits down. Emma’s necklines are always revealing in a way. Even the ladies at the reception come to work donning the tightest tops.

I am so confused.

Or am I? The only explanation is that they hate me. I’m still on my probationary period, and they already hate me. I can get fired at any moment for reasons I don’t even fully understand.

What a disaster.

Shaking off the thoughts, I launch a new document and start consolidating data that my team has gathered for a report Melinda wants to receive today. I lose track of time as I crunch the numbers, collect the proper images and imbed everything into properly branded slides with graphs and pie charts.

My eyes burn, so I get up and walk around my room for a minute, completely ignoring the buzzing that indicates that my phone is vibrating in my purse. If it’s Benjamin again, then I can’t handle his tantrums right now. The phone continues to hiss, and it’s driving me insane, so I angrily leap toward the bag and fish it out with the intention to set it on ‘silent.’ I see that it’s Samantha calling.

“Hey,” I quickly answer before she hangs up. “Sorry, I thought you were Ben again.”

“Again?”

“Yeah,” I flop down in my chair behind the desk. “Every other day, there’s a new creation.” I gesture with my hand in the air. “He’s a living, breathing nightmare with a fully charged phone and a desire to scare me to death.”

“Gee, I’m so sorry, hon.
